What is PET CT?
PET CT combines two powerful technologies — Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography — to create a comprehensive picture of both structure and function within your body.
A small amount of radiotracer (FDG) is injected, which is absorbed by active cells. Cancer cells absorb significantly more, making them glow on the scan.
The CT component maps the exact anatomical location of any abnormal activity, giving your doctor precise location and size information.
The entire procedure takes approximately 2–3 hours including tracer uptake time. The actual scan is only 20–30 minutes.
The radiotracer used is safe and exits the body naturally within a few hours. The radiation dose is comparable to other diagnostic scans.
Clinical Applications
PET CT is used across oncology, cardiology, and neurology for diagnosis, staging, and treatment monitoring.
Detects tumours, lymphoma, lung, breast, colorectal, cervical, head & neck cancers. Identifies metastases across the whole body in a single scan.
Evaluates myocardial viability, detects cardiac sarcoidosis, and identifies areas of reduced blood flow before bypass surgery.
Diagnoses Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, and brain tumours. Maps brain function and identifies seizure foci.
Assess if chemotherapy or radiation therapy is working — often weeks before structural changes appear on CT or MRI.
When cancer is found in lymph nodes but the origin is unknown, PET CT can locate the primary tumour source efficiently.
Monitor patients for cancer recurrence after treatment completion. Early detection of relapse significantly improves outcomes.
